The sound of Ipanema
Bossa nova means 'new wave'. It was born in the late 1950s in the apartments of Copacabana and Ipanema, when João Gilberto, Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Moraes slowed samba down and made it quiet, intimate and cool. It is the sound of Rio at its most romantic, and it went on to charm the whole world, Frank Sinatra included.
The night before we marry, we want exactly that: candlelight, a guitar, and the people we love most at one long table. It's the calm before the celebration, and our moment to say thank you.
Did you know?
- 'Chega de Saudade', recorded by João Gilberto in 1958, is considered the first bossa nova record.
- 'The Girl from Ipanema', written by Jobim and Vinicius in 1962, is one of the most recorded songs in history.
- Getz/Gilberto won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1965 and made bossa nova a sensation in the US.
- Frank Sinatra didn't write bossa nova, but he fell for it: in 1967 he recorded a whole album with Jobim, 'Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim'.
