Travel

Plan to land by Saturday, June 5 so you don't miss the welcome party. Here's everything you need to get to Rio and around it.

Visa (US guests, read this first)

US citizens need a Brazilian e-visa to enter Brazil. Apply online at brazil.vfsevisa.com. It’s valid for 10 years with multiple entries. Brazil recommends applying about two months before your trip, so aim for early April 2027. Make sure your passport is valid for the whole trip.

Print your e-visa and have the paper copy in hand when you land in Brazil. A copy on your phone is not enough.

Flights

Fly into Rio de Janeiro–Galeão (GIG), the international airport. From Texas there are no nonstops, so expect one connection. Common routes go through Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Panama City or São Paulo. Overnight flights usually land in Rio in the morning, which is perfect: check in, nap, beach.

If you’re already in Brazil, Santos Dumont (SDU) is the domestic airport right in the city center.

Book by early 2027. June is a popular month and prices climb.

From the airport

Galeão is about 40–60 minutes from Ipanema and Copacabana, depending on traffic. The easiest option is Uber (pick-up is signposted outside arrivals) or a pre-paid taxi from the official desks inside the terminal. Skip the drivers who approach you in the hall.

We’re planning group transfers for guests arriving on June 4 and 5. Details will be here closer to the date.

Getting around

  • Uber and 99 are cheap, safe and everywhere. Use them at night.
  • Walking is the best way to see Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana during the day.
  • The metro is clean and easy between Ipanema, Copacabana and downtown.
  • For events outside the city (like the boat day) we’ll arrange transport and tell you where to meet.

Money

Brazil uses the real (R$). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including beach kiosks, and PIX is how locals pay. Tell your bank you’re traveling and bring a card with no foreign transaction fees. A little cash is handy for tips and beach vendors.

Good to know

  • Time zone: Rio is 2 hours ahead of Texas in June.
  • Power: Brazil uses Type N plugs and a mix of 127 V and 220 V outlets. Bring a universal adapter.
  • Phone: Get an eSIM before you fly or turn on your carrier’s international plan. Everyone in Brazil uses WhatsApp, so install it.
  • Language: Portuguese, not Spanish. A “obrigado” (thank you) goes a long way. Our Brazilian family will be happy to help.
  • Water: Drink bottled or filtered water.
